In the YouTube clip where you see the cat flushing the toilet again and again, the cat is controlling the story. The camera watches in real time. It sits there, silently waiting for the cat to do the next thing. There are no judicious edits. Yes, the camera decides the angle, and when to begin and end, but it’s all very minimal. You watch like you’re at home, peeping around the bathroom door. In a news bulletin story, the reporter controls the story. Time is compressed; the reporter uses all the storytelling arts. The reporter does a story about cops. The cops feel neutral, or betrayed, or pleased with what the reporter did. This is the difference between traditional media and new media. People are sharing the cat (5,218,409 views so far) and not watching the news.
